The Art of the Offer
A skilled manager can take certain steps to insure that the job process
proceeds smoothly from initial interview to offer stage. Identifying well-qualified
applicants can be a time consuming task and is only the first in a multi-step
process. During this multi-step process, it is critical that the hiring
manager and applicant stay on the same wave-length. A skilled and experienced
recruiter can assist you in this process. The hiring process is all about
expectations, yours and the candidates. There are some factors which are
more important than others in order to get to the offer stage, but no detail
should be assumed. A skilled and experienced recruiter can make sure that
you have as much information up front to ensure a smooth process
and acceptance of your employment offer.
Tips for Making a Viable Offer:
- Design a solid strategy for presenting the offer: know what the "hot"
buttons are for the applicant and make sure you stress those in the
offer.
- Stress career potential and promotional opportunities within your
company.
- Consider yourself an example of the type of employee your company
wishes to employ. Feel free to share your positive experiences and growth
history within the company.
- After you have made the offer, set a deadline for the candidate to
accept or refuse the offer.
- Emphasize the challenge of the position and management's vision for
the position/department, etc.
- Prepare ahead of time by having a packet of company literature that
includes brochures, newsletters, and an annual report ready to present
or overnight to the applicant.
- Provide the candidate with an idea of how he or she would work within
the new department and the roles which others would play in relation
to him or her.
- Include any perks, for example, vacation allowances, bonus opportunities,
stock options, incentive trips, etc.
- Remain enthusiastic about the position throughout the entire negotiation
process.
- Have in mind an appropriate start-date for the applicant. Remember
that most top applicants don't want to burn any bridges and will want
to give their current employer at least two weeks notice
